Global Music Teacher Training
At Olympias, we open up the world for young people who long for a music education. Bringing them together with excellent music teachers, they are supported to flourish so they can benefit from the distinct opportunities that a musical life offers.
Many of the young people we teach are from global majority backgrounds, and despite our best efforts we have in the past, struggled to find qualified music teachers from global majority backgrounds and non-Western traditions to work with.
We are delighted to announce that we have received funding from Arts Council England to carry out a one-year ‘Global Music Teacher Training’ programme which we hope can inspire a transformation in music education in the UK. We have already started training and developing three exceptional global majority musicians with the teaching skills they need to share their musical heritage with our young musicians as professional teachers.
As part of this project, we are supporting a PhD student funded in partnership with the RNCM and senior lecturer Dr Robert Gardiner to assess the project outcomes and share them with the research community. BROADEN Films is following the project's progress, making a documentary to share the process and stages of development. A full Evaluation will be overseen by Jo Yee Cheung (Olympias CEO) followed by a case study to be made available online.
The Global Music Teacher Training from Olympias is a new way to broaden and diversify Western models of music education. We are excited that this programme will provide skilled inspirational, relatable musical role models for young people from global majority backgrounds to learn new instruments. We hope to see this project diversify future generations of audiences and music performers, creating a pipeline of future musical talent from different backgrounds and musical traditions.
